Tangled Webs

O, what tangled worldwide webs we’ve woven!
The deceit we’ve practiced is an omen.
Technology that promised connection
has ushered in new waves of deception.

Online we can all be anonymous,
we can be dashing and mysterious,
we can adopt a new identity
with no basis in our reality.

Avatars and aliases, screen names,
second lives, pseudonyms, no one can blame.
We claim we are guarding our privacy,
but where is the accountability?

I read a post on cyberbullying,
the story of a promising young teen
tortured by anonymous posts online
she lost all hope, committed suicide.

How much betrayal started first online
through email, chat rooms, pornography sites,
marriages lost, relationships destroyed
by ventures in the anonymous void?
